How to take a UK driving theory test with 35 questions not 50!
If you have a Safe Road User Award, you can take a shortened version of the UK driving theory test! Instead of tackling 50 multiple choice questions, you will only have to answer 35. Here’s how…
What is the Safe Road User Award?
Developed by the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) and the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), the Safer Road User Award was introduced in January 2009. At the time it was launched, the UK government had a vision to improve driving attitudes on Britain’s roads.
The Safer Road User Award is designed to build positive attitudes towards motoring in the UK, helping young people to take responsibility for using the roads safely. The aim is to make young people proficient drivers at an early stage, enabling them to adopt positive attitudes and behaviours towards Britain’s roads for life.
With the death toll rising on Britain’s roads among 17 - 25 year olds, the Safe Road User Award educates the country’s newest motorists on the importance of responsible driving.
How does the award help you to sit a shorter UK driving theory test?
If you complete the Safe Road User course successfully, you will become eligible for the ‘abridged theory test’, introduced in October 2009. This test consists of 35 questions rather than the standard 50 and is currently available at 10 theory test centres across England and Scotland.
To pass the abridged car theory test, you need to score 30 or more out of 35. Not only are there fewer questions, but it costs less too. You pay £24, rather than the standard £31 charge. However, you will still face 14 hazard perception clips, in keeping with the regular UK driving theory test.
It’s worth noting that once you have achieved a Safe Road User Award, you must take the abridged theory test within three years, otherwise your eligibility to take the shortened exam expires.
